After the Holocaust, Nazi propaganda media was dismantled, with key figures like Julius Streicher executed and Hans Fritzsche briefly imprisoned following the Nuremberg Trials. Approximately 20-30 million Germans, about 40% of the population, supported the Nazis, heavily influenced by their pervasive propaganda. The Smith-Mundt Act of 1948 was enacted to prevent similar government propaganda in the U.S. by prohibiting domestic dissemination of state-produced information. This safeguard was lifted by the Smith-Mundt Modernization Act of 2012, signed by President Obama, to modernize public diplomacy and increase transparency, inadvertently allowing such materials to reach U.S. citizens.
